William Jia, Ph.D --- Chief Scientist
Dr.William Jia is the Tenured Professor of the School of medicine, University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada and a Senior Scientist of British Columbia Cancer Agency; served on the Scientific Review Panel at the National Cancer Institute of Canada and was appointed to Peer Review Panel for Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR). He has been honored with Chair Professorship in the School of Life Sciences at Fudan University.
He graduated from the Faculty of Biology, Fudan University, China in 1982, and obtained his PhD in molecular neurosciences from University of British Columbia (UBC) in 1992 under the supervision of Professor Dr. Max Cynader, a well-known developmental neurobiologist and director of the Brain Research Centre at UBC. He has over 20 years of research experience in many fields including molecular biology, cancer, gene therapy and neurology sciences. Dr. Jia was the first few scientists in the world using human Herpes simplex virus to treat cancer, which pioneered the field of oncolytic virotherapy for cancer treatment. His major contribution was the first to prove that genetic engineered virus could selectively destroy malignant brain cancer in an animal model with a competent immune system. This work was published in the highest ranked cancer journal: The Journal of National Cancer Institute with an editorial comments and gained a lot of attention in general public as well. The results were cited repeatedly at hearings of the US Congress for gene therapy and used as a critical evidence for the safety of gene therapy.
In recent years, Dr. Jia's interest has been in the study of natural products for anti-cancer and anti-viral infection effects. He has recently discovered that several plant-derived compounds not only possess strong tumor inhibitory effect but also can dramatically enhance the efficacy of conventional anti-tumor drugs. He was the first ever and discovered ginsenoside Rh2 not only competitively reverse the drug resistance on multidrug resistant tumor cells but also may further sensitize MDR tumor cells to chemotherapeutics for potential synergistic effects. He was inventor of "Ginsenoside Rh2 and its derivatives chemotherapy" and a patent application based on this finding has been obtained. The findings have translated into new drug research and development stage of a line of anticancer natural products. Most recently, Dr. Jia has proposed a new concept for drug development from traditional medicine. The concept is named "Post-Absorption/Metabolism Drug" or PAMD. This concept emphasizes on identifying and isolation of chemical components that are absorbed and presence in the blood and target organs after orally taken the medicine instead of original chemicals contained in herbs. Utilizing this concept, some novel lead compounds have been identified with potent pharmacological activity and extremely low toxicity, which are being developed for novel drug candidates.
In 2003, Dr. Jia and Dr. William Campbell, another scientist of Pegasus Pharmaceuticals, were the first in the world to map all the specific epitopes of SARS corona virus, which could be developed into diagnostic kits for SARS, and SARS vaccines. This research project has received government funding from the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR).
In the past 10 years, Dr. Jia has received many awards and research funds from Canadian government agencies. Since 1997, he has been a Scholar of Canadian Institute of Health Research for his contribution in the field of gene therapy. Dr. Jia was listed as one of 20 outstanding medical scientists in Canada in the August 1999 TIME'S Canadian edition. He is the author of over 50 articles published in scientific journals, has presented over 50 papers at national and international scientific meetings, and is the holder of several patents.
William Campbell, Ph.D --- Senior Scientist of Proteomics

After leaving Japan, Dr. Campbell spent two years as Visiting Professor at the Kinsmen Laboratory of Neurological Research at the University of British Columbia before joining Pegasus Pharmaceuticals Group Inc. Dr. Campbell has over 30 year of experience in the field of protein chemistry. In 1989, while in Japan as an Associate Professor at Nagoya City University, he discovered a novel enzyme, carboxypeptidase R, an important regulator of inflammation and fibrinolysis. Over the past several years he has made use of novel computer algorithms that create peptide antibody mimetics to targets in proteins and has used peptide array technology to identify potential drug candidates for both therapeutic and diagnostic applications in infectious diseases, cancer, immune dysfunction syndrome and neurologic disorders. He and Dr. Jia were the first few scientists in the world using peptide array technology to probe and identify SARS CoV-specific epitopes. Dr. Campbell has authored more than 30 research papers and is contributing several most cited review articles.
