Pegasus' proprietary technology platforms include: Selective Metabolites Compound Drug (SMCD), Oral Bioavailability Enhancement Technology (OBET), Peptide Array Technology (Pep-Hit). Pegasus has filed more than 20 patents for these technologies, some of which have been granted in The United States, Canada, China, The European Union, Japan, Singapore, India and other countries.
Each of these three technology platforms plays an important role in the current era of biomedicine research: peptide array technology represents a cutting-edge proteomics technology in the post-genomic era, whereas the selective metabolites compound drug technology and oral bioavailability enhancement technology are cutting-edge innovations in the development of natural health products and botanical drugs. By using the peptide array technology, scientists can unravel the secrets of protein-protein interactions. This technically competitive technology has been widely recognized as a prospective approach in research and development of vaccines, drugs, diagnostic kits for a variety of diseases.
The therapeutic value of traditional Chinese medicine has been widely recognized worldwide, however, it is still very difficult to be emerged into the mainstream western drug market because traditional Chinese medicine is often a multi-component product without clear chemical composition and efficacy. The chemical composition of traditional Chinese medicine is a highly complex structure. Pegasus' "Selective Metabolites Compound Drug (SMCD)" technology is a breakthrough in the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine. Pegasus uses proprietary manufacturing process to derive metabolites directly from natural raw materials, bypassing the body's metabolic system. The composition of the drug developed by SMCD is clearly identified and characterized, highly consistent and controllable in quality. SMCD can be a large-scale industrial product which is compliable to GMP requirements. On the other hand, oral intake is the most commonly adopted drug delivery route. Many natural medicinal ingredients such as saponins have very low oral bioavailability (for example, the bioavailability of most ginseng formula is about 5%) after oral intake. An ideal solution to the problem is protection of the ingredients in their intact molecular form from effects of gastric-intestinal fluids and increasing stomach absorption. Pegasus' "oral bioavailability enhancement technology (OBET)" greatly increases the oral bioavailability of botanical medicinal ingredients (the bioavailability of saponins is improved to as high as 60 ~ 70%!) in their medicinally active form and greatly enhances their pharmacological effects. These two novel technologies help remove the bottleneck issue of Traditional Chinese Medicine to be accepted by the mainstream western medicine. Pegasus proudly owns independent intellectual property rights for these two technology platforms.
Using the state-of-the-art technology of "Peptide Array Technology (Pep-Hit)", Pegasus was the first in the world to map all the specific epitopes of SARS coronavirus. Furthermore, this technology helps identify unique active peptides for inhibiting reverse transcriptase of HIV, carboxypeptidase R, multidrug resistance protein P-GP, complement C5a, tyrosinase, and binding to Tau protein to inhibit polymerization. These active peptides are promising candidates for novel drug development.
Pegasus proudly stands as an international leader in the research of dammarane Sapogenins and its pharmacological activities. In April 2003, the National Research Council Canada (NRC) had evaluated the research results of the anti-cancer mechanisms of Dammarane Sapogenins, and approved this project as a key national research project with long-term funding. Later in November 2003, after three rounds of evaluation of the pre-clinical and clinical studies of dammarane Sapogenins, the federal government of Canada ranked this project as a key national research project with long-term funding granted.
Since year 2000, for several years Pegasus has published papers in the annual oncology conventions hosted by some of the internationally most reputable oncology research associations such as the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR). Pegasus has also published several papers on some of the world's most authoritative magazines including the "Cancer" and the "Journal of Natural Products" magazines of the United States, and the "Journal of Chinese Integrative Medicine" of China. Pegasus' in-depth scientific research and analysis on the pharmacology and mechanisms of Dammarane Sapogenins as well as the clinical applications of Careseng® product series have aroused attention of the world's medical community.
By using its proprietary technology platforms, Pegasus had successfully developed a series of Careseng® products containing herb-derived active ingredients. Since launching into the market in year 2001, with exceptionally high concentration of active ingredients and high oral bioavailability, the natural and non-toxic Careseng® product series stands out incomparably among other similar products and has won high reputations in North America, Japan, China and other South Asian regions. By year 2006, Health Canada issued production licenses to Pegasus. By 2008, HemoMexI, HemoMexS (Careseng® SG2) had past the strict evaluation by the Ministry of Health, Republic of Georgia and had been approved as oncology prescription drugs. Lipo-Aid (Careseng® MK), Cardio Guard (Bioseng® #1) had been approved as OTC non-prescription drugs for cardio-vascular conditions. In May 2010, HemoMex injection was approved by the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan as cancer standard treatment prescription drug, and has been included in the national health insurance purchasing plan.
In terms of drug research and development, besides the patented technologies being disclosed, Pegasus Pharmaceuticals Group Inc. also has in store many more confidential proprietary technologies (Know-how).
